Since registry offices in New Zealand closed, registry ceremonies have been conducted by authorised VCANZ Registry Celebrants (I'm one of them). These ceremonies take place at a location within 10 kms of your chosen celebrant.

What is a Registry Ceremony?

A registry ceremony is designed for couples who want a straightforward, fuss-free way to get married without the planning, expense, or formality of a traditional wedding.

Registry ceremonies are ideal for couples who are:

Looking for a simple legal ceremony.
Planning a larger celebration at a later date.
Working within a budget.
Short on time but ready to make it official.

The Ceremony Experience

The ceremony itself is brief but still meaningful. It follows a prescribed script with set vows, ensuring all the legal requirements are met while still celebrating your commitment to one another.

You can invite up to 10 guests, including your two witnesses, and the ceremony can be held at your home or in a public location such as a park or beach. The government-set celebrant fee for a registry ceremony is $175.

What to Expect

While registry ceremonies don't include personalised vows, readings, or music, they are still a lovely way to celebrate one of life's most important moments.

One of the biggest advantages is their simplicity. All you have to do is book your ceremony with a registry celebrant, confirming the date, time and venue, plus apply for your marriage licence. On the day, simply bring your two witnesses, and enjoy the moment.
